the tides in the bay are funny
when most of the water is pulled out the gate as in a ebb
the sides go in the opasit way thay flood
and when it floods in the center the side of the bay will ebb
it happens at crissy and ti..

i could show you better then i can spell it to ya..
also
over by the gate the water never stops moveing
there is no slack tide its comeing or going

i like to add or subtrack the curent to the wind speed
so if its flooding and the wind is 14mph thats like 9mph
and go the other way for the ebb

Does that bay model in Sausalito from the Corps of Engineers give any practical insight? I've always been meaning to take my kids there.

As for the kiting, I just take any part of the ebb and don't putz around by anita rock. Shoot upwind so you have some breathing room.

Oh yeah and be sure to schedule business trips when its flooding! I really got that wrong 2 years ago and was always out of synch.

Yesterday was ideal at Crissy. Filled in to the beach, ebbing all afternoon, smooth water, and the wind, while not super strong was very steady. Hopefully today is a repeat. :P

I've kited Crissy a dozen or so times, but am always a little nervous, as I don't know if two or three other kites out there really means its worthwhile. I've found its hard to judge kite size too.

I live in SF and besides Waddell and OB, its where I want to spend the most time.
Thanks!
We are there, like Gabe said, any time the wind on the sensor reads over 14mph. This means that it is at least 22mph in the Bay. Most of the time whatever the T.I. sensor is reading is what it is like out there. Also if you live close a good way to see if people are kiting is to use the explorium cam. Kite size is 12/13 90% of the time. If you feel the need to go bigger than that you should just use a bigger board. There is a lot more wind in the Bay then at the beach.

I would like to add if you ride Crissy please ride in the Bay and not a the beach.

Why? If the wind fills in all the way to the beach, what's wrong with riding there?

Davesail, the beach area is for:

1. entry and exit to and from the water.
2. windsurfer zone, and beginner windsurfers.
3. little kids at the beach water line.

Crissy kiting calls for a more serious, mature, safety oriented attitude.

You could say the same thing about any beach. You can kite close to the beach without putting people in harm's way. Try kiting somewhere not as uptight as this state some time. If you can kite in control, there should be no problem. If you can't, then get the hell out of there. I totally agree with your statement:
Crissy kiting calls for a more serious, mature, safety oriented attitude.
That is a good reason to stay close in such that you can easily swim in if something goes wrong. Who wants to get picked up by the CG anyway? BTW, in the interest of safety, next time try launching your kite with both hands on the bar.

I still want to hear Chris's opinion on the matter since he made the statement.

Look, I'm not trying to be facetious. What I want to know is:

* Is access threatened because of prior incidents?
* Are there regulations I don't know about?
* Or is this simply an opinion based on preference?

We have a similar debate at Sherman with the whole buoys thing. But that is a much, much smaller area to launch/land and I don't want to start that thread again. Since I'm new to the whole Crissy experience, I'm looking for the beta. I was there last Saturday and had a great time. I didn't bring a VHF (nor did I want to carry one) and I like flat water. So I stayed in close (and I wasn't the only one). No one said anything to me at that time.
