GPS fun at 3rd

Post by liv2kitesurf » Thu Sep 28, 2006 9:11 pm

Had fun today at 3rd with my new Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS watch. MotionBased

It was a late, short afterwork session ... but fun nonetheless. Especially painless since I did not lose a board this time and did not lose a bar & lines (both of I have done in the last month). 12m Vegas 06 with new 07 bar (nice !) and 5'0" Rocketfish

altimitor trace would be pretty boring with me as I am not much of a jumper. The greastest eleveation change would have been when I reached up to see if I could reach the depower strap on my new North bar. in particular, I am not a sender. I usually only get air if I launch off of a wave. I spend more of my time in the bay chasing little fleeting and fleeing swells. kinda fun the gps... I mostly got it for running and paddling (on my 12 foot stock class paddleboard).

good winds,

So what did you think?

Paul - so what do you think of the new North bar? Does it make the 12m turn faster?

How did you like the rocketfish? I'm glad to hear you stepped up to a directional....a wave dude like you will love how it works in the waves.....I'm getting a custom version of that, 5'10".....

Good winds + waves, Zeev.

The altimeter would not be that actuate. The GPS unit is taking samples not recording the whole time. This with the chance of it getting you at the peak of jump is really low.

Motionbased.com is fun. Search for "kite" and you will find a lot of interesting places.

That is so cool, how does one get set up on a service like that after getting the watch, do you simply upload your waypoints or is all automated?

I know I always give you a hard time about being a gearhead, but I have to admit that I'm even intrigued about the all of the GPS toys out there. A windsurfing buddy (yes, poleboarders and kiters CAN be friends) has a Navman that works pretty well. There's an group of windsurfers who are using them in an informal competition to see who can get top speed. Something to do with posting the speed along with the map plotting the course and wind. 75 mph in our car on the way to the launch doesn't count.

Top speed of 23 mph is pretty good given the conditions. Let's see how high you can take it in some glassy water and big winds!

I believe the larger Garmin Edge 205/305 has a barometric altimeter and therefore may actually be recording the whole time (although I am not certain of this and it may be sampling at the same intervals).

Below is an export form your device that was uploaded to MB. If the device has a 'Real Time' altimeter it does not export the data.

here is a link to explain what aa" Barometric Altimeter" is and how it works in Garmin Sports GPS units http://wiki.motionbased.com/mb/Barometric_Altimeter
