Mr. Horny,
As I have been in the film industry for the past 30 years and also currently being a working musician, I would be happy to help guide any inspired film / video maker with their soundtrack. But in answer to your question, I feel it best to never use someone's music on any professional venture unless you have their approval, even if it were "not for profit"...
Oh yah, It is OK though to use unautherised music if it is a home movie or a porno...

I couldn't use it unless I paid for the rights. I'm well aware of that.
What I am looking for are specific songs that you might have in mind.
Crystal Method has been used alot-"High Roller" is now on a victorias secret commercial --Plus they're rights will be expensive.
I'm looking for unique, up and coming rock/punk songs. Similar to:
http://www.kiteboardingmag.com/index.jsp (video for Len10)
or
http://media.bestkiteboarding.com/video ... _promo.wmv
or even last years crossbow video if anyone remembers.
One response I got was "Story of the year". Anyone know which cut?

Music is important for sure. Everyone's tastes seem to be different as should be expected.
More than music I'd like to see a kite vid/dvd that is well put together. All kite vids/dvds feel like some joe with a video camera filmed it and edited it with Final Cut Pro. All the kite vids I've seen (I have over a dozen) look to be put together by someone who doesn't know diddly about timing, pacing and ryhthm. Take a look at the old "Animal Chin" video from Powell Peralta (old school skateboarding). That thing lives on today because it was "the next level," it was a real film. There's a vid/dvd called "Auto Focus A film about Kiteboarding." Man, that is not a film about kiteboarding. It's a video edited with a bunch of random footage from someone's kiteboarding holiday. "Into the Air" by contrast is defintely a cool "film."
I look forward to seeing what a little effort and a bit of a budget to hire a real production crew would do. It will happen and it will be sick! There's already a bunch of vids/dvds that show kiteloop handle passes all day long.
Music is key to get people pumped, but the footage and the way it's filmed and put together is the real meat in my opinion.
my 2 bits.

What I'm trying to do is put together a video for the kite bum.
(We can't afford Crystal Method-"high roller"--but We are looking for some good Local bands and --specific tracks-- that would work well with kiteboarding.)
So-- if anyone has good ideas please submit them. It will be rewarding and come back to you. It's like Earl. Good karma goes with you. I can say that my budget is roughly $100 for the song to accompany a kite video on the web. The video will be 3 minutes in length. It will promote a particular venue-- that's all.
Sorry I can't compensate more.
