Please note that when I stated
The dude was moving [glow=red]FAST[/glow]!
it was a clear acknowlegement of red shift wave theory...
That is, Andy moving away from the observer would be viewed in a wave length lengthened and in that spectrum the water surface would become smoother which would enhance the passage of water across the planing surface of the board combining with the downward slope of the wave actually accelerate Andy to the speeds witnessed, and recorded in Hawking time. Since Andy knows science he probably used this knowledge to advantage to bugle my eyevballs  ... And if Charlie can find something other than a twelve meter kite... Who knows?

GPS on the cheap..

Postby Flat-water » Thu Apr 20, 2006 3:52 pm

So I came across this GPS system on Amazon.com and gave it a shot.. Works well and you get all sorts of data. With a free membership to MotionBased.com you get nice maps and stuff.. So far worth the money ñ nice way to keep track of days on the water and distance.

Hereís some links :

$116.00 Garmin Forerunner 201 ñ Serial output version. (USB see below)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000C ... lectronics
Get the free shipping ñ They ship out of Richmond, CA so youíll get it in ~3 days

Save some money with this $9.00 USB to Serial converter ñ works with all the Garmin GPS software.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/st ... oding=UTF8

After a day ëAt the Officeí upload the data and this is what you get..

All for $125.. :)

Cheers!!

I attach my latest gps recording from last Monday.

All this was done on my Crossbow 12 and Slingshot Glide.

The file has the following data:

Distance: 12.31 nm
Average Speed: 14.4 mph
Max Speed: 23.2 mph
Time: 59m (3-4pm)

To see the wind - or lack of it, click here: Ikitesurf Wind Alameda 4/17/06

For those of you who believe the Glide is slow, note that 23.2 mph on this board, with winds around 10 mph (3-4pm) is not too shabby.

I can't wait till others start posting their outings here! =D>

Jeff - MotionBased.com has a Google Earth export function. I'm sure others have that function as well.

Leo - Sweet! Nice day with no wind per-say..

Got my Garmin Forerunner today... pretty basic... but waterproof and has a custom page for three fields... I set mine to Speed, Top Speed, and Distance Traveled... It can also display a breadcrumbs on a map/ navigation field.... For around $100 it is a great tool to have for racing and such... plus all the fancy mapping stuff can be done at home on the computer....
