As with any spot that you've never been to, it is best to visit it at low tide. Low tide will show you some potential underwater hazards. You might find it useful to visit 3rd ave at low tide and just take a walk from the upper launch all the way to the bridge. Along the way, you'll notice ramps for exiting the water, as well as little sandy beaches. Those sandy beaches seem to disappear during high tide. It is easier to exit at the ramps or beaches. Exiting on the rocky shore itself is doable, I find wearing booties is easier on your feet.
In your upper to lower launches and landings, I would recommend learning to have your kite in hand by the time you reach the sand (or rocks in the case of 3rd ave). Once you become proficient in this technique of being able to depower the kite on your own, and wrap up your lines, and make your way back to shore, you are ready to ride at most places. IMO, learning to self rescue is more important than learning to get up on your board.
