'Most Wanted' criminal awaits extradition in McAllen
Thursday, October 13, 2005†† Updated: 02:42 PM
Twenty-eight-year-old Gary Edward Lasher was featured as one of America's Most Wanted's "dirty dozen," a title reserved for "the worst of the worst," according to the TV show's Web site.
Several tips led police and FBI agents to Lasher, who they say was living and working in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
FBI agent Jorge Cisneros said Lasher faces charges of kidnapping, child molestation, sexual assault of a spouse and possession of child pornography. Lasher admitted doing "a lot of things" he could not remember.
"I was under the influence of a lot of drugs," Lasher told NEWSCHANNEL 5. "I don't remember too clearly...I'm sure we'll find out in the next few days."
When asked if he raped his wife, Lasher replied, "I did a lot of things...I'm not sure what though."
He claimed he was trying to start a new life in Mexico.
"I was a kite-surfing instructor," Lasher said.
Cisneros credited Mexican authorities in helping capture the fugitive.
"I'd like to also thank the Mexican authorities for their assistance in apprehending this individual and bringing him to justice here in the states," Cisneros said.
He added that fugitives flown to the U.S. from Mexico are often brought to the FBI office in McAllen for processing, because of its close proximity to the border.
