kiteboarding tahoe

hi all.....there have been various comments on kiting on lake tahoe and just wanted to clear up any misconceptions.

tahoe is not a kiteboarding destination. it is novelty riding on the few days it is on.

there are a few spots to kite at around the lake. they are all hazardous at best.

there are a few good kiteable days in the spring and fall.

things you will need to deal with: rocks, buoys, boats, 60' fir and pine trees, piers, tourists on the beach with no clue, very cold water in the spring and fall. the highway.

if you do not have solid kiteboarding skills please do not attemp to kite on lake tahoe. you need to be able to stay upwind. self launch in very tight hazardous conditions. be comfortable kiting in very gusty conditions (15 to 40 kind of stuff). be able to self land in very tight hazardous conditions. be smart enough to see the rocks and stay off the rocks, be able to deal with very steep short frequency wind swell that can reach head high plus.

do not try to learn to kiteboard at any of the lake tahoe kiteboarding spots. the locals will run you off for good reason. all tahoe sites are advanced only. do not jepordize access. go to washoe to learn if you need a local tahoe beginner site.

if you chose to fly trainer kites at any of the tahoe launches.....be smart and observe what is going on and give folks landing and launching plenty of room. the beaches are very narrow and the trees are tall.

please come enjoy the postcard picture kiting the lake has to offer, but you will not get delta style clean wind or waddel style clean waves. there is an awefull lot going on while kiting on the lake. heads up, be safe, be smart, be very considerate to everyone you encounter.

thanks, see you on the water!

Thanks for the post. We share the same feelings toward several of our Bay sites, and much of what you say applies to them as well. The worst thing would be well-intentioned or eager riders without the requisite skills and experience setting out to kite at a spot that they are not ready to kite at. But at what cost?
