Berkeley Guidelines

Post by OliverG » Mon Jul 18, 2005 7:14 am

We've seen a fair amuont of new faces at Berkeley recently and it seems many are not familiar with the guidelines for this location. With it's close proximity to the Bay trail, the Frontage Road and Interstate 80, it is a sensitive launch requiring sound judgement and skills.

Lately, some have been observed flying their kite above the Bay Trail, riding too close to shore and going out when it's obviously too light and subsequently being forced to come in at the lower Frontage Road beach, which is even closer to the Hwy. It is almost always light and holey on the inside. Maintaining a strong upwind tack immediately is required!

The wind there, especially at this time of year can be very iffy.

Please take a moment to read the guidelines and info about this launch here. All it takes is one incident or case of bad judgement and everyone suffers.

Couple of things to remember:

1. Even if the sensor is reading 18-20, inside holes and thermal voids can make it very difficult to get out.

2. Onshore winds combined with a small launch surrounded by rocks and roads leave no room for mistakes.

3. It is not Alameda. If conditions are obviously light, please do not go out!!

Remember, your actions can determine the future and health of our sport. Please be responsible!

Thank you!

Yes, that's pretty much it, in a nutshell!
