Alameda is the best place to learn in the Bay Area. Nice size beach and the typical wind blows side-on, so if you run into trouble, you'll just get blown back to shore.

Even though Alameda is the best place to learn, you have to watch out for a few things. Here are a few "Don'ts"

Don't go out in storm winds.

Alameda can also have very strong wind in the spring time. Don't be the first one first one out as the wind starts off light and then can gradually build to 25+ mph which can be a nightmare for a beginner. Usually the wind peaks out about 3pm, and then either comes down a little or stays steady until dark.

There are a few submerged objects close to shore right by the shack (where everyone launches) that you want to avoid. Have someone point them out to you before you go in the water. Most kiters there will know where they are, just ask.

Good luck and have fun!

Also don't kite or practice when the wind is blowing on shore. Alameda has been getting alot of winds from the south this spring. Very dangerous for a newbie
