Kiting on South Lake Tahoe

Post by kite2017 » Sat Sep 02, 2017 7:38 pm

Is there a good wind sensor / reliable wind forecast for kiting on South Lake Tahoe?

Does anyone know if there'll be winds tomorrow/Monday?

I don't think it will be a good forecast for Sunday or Monday. Where would you launch? This year the water level is high, so a lot of beaches are under water. Washoe lake is a good spot, but no wind this weekend.

I use Bijou sensor for South Lake Tahoe. Stateline sensor is another one, it is close to Nevada beach.

Forecasting:
http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.ph ... axZwDOZOi4
https://www.wunderground.com/weather/us/ca/stateline

These are the ones my buddy told me to use. Are they reliable? Yes and No. None of these I've found to be perfect, but they do give you a good indication of what could happen. In my experience when a Lake Wind Advisory is issued stating something to this effect, it's been fun for kiting...
* Winds: southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 40 mph.
* Wave heights: 2 to 4 feet, especially from mid-lake to north and Eastern Shores.

Note: The "gusts" are usually found in the middle of the lake, not near shore where we kite!

These "real time" tools can also be useful...
Current weather:

No kite'able wind was forecasted this weekend due to the heat wave.

Forecast looks more promising for north lake
Listing gear is bad, and you should feel bad.

I deleted the Edgewood cam in my post above since it's down right now.
This actually may be a better cam that shows Nevada Beach in the background when it pans far right...

Today's forecast is perfect for Tahoe.

Can you launch from that beach?

I saw some YouTube videos of people kiting at Nevada beach. I think it is the only kitable place on south shore now since the water level is so high.

Yes. As Alex indicated, Nevada Beach is really the only beach that's conducive to kiting in SLT. Park and rig/launch at the most S part of the beach.

Do you know of any other spots in SLT that are kite'able when the lake is lower? I've heard there's a spot near the Tahoe Keys area.
