Sherman Island Air Traffic Control

Post by Bob » Sat Feb 05, 2005 9:35 pm

Indian Bob has been busy improving the kite launch this winter.

He has widened the rigging area a bit and more importantly, he has opened a second passage to the water at the upwind end of the beach. Said it took him a week to hack through and clean it up and carpet it.

Looks Great!
Thank you Indian Bob!

The plan is to have one end available only to come in from the water and the opposite end only to move out to the water. This will hopefully help to cut down on the bottleneck at the log.

Today was the first day there had been a westerly at Sherman in three months. Noting the flags he reminded us that last February there were seven good kiteable days on the river. So keep an eye inland as well until the season really kicks in.

General Lee indicated that the river water this time of year is a lot colder than during the summer. This fact did not deter him as he decided to go in au natural and play with his coconut anyway!

Just don't kite there. It's dangerous and the locals have a bad attitude. The water is dirty and the parking is scarce. If you get flushed down the river, good luck on the rocks getting out. Tons of windsurfers too. Go to Alameda, it's much better in all respects. Or Florida...

Thanks Indian Bob, have you posted those "No Trespassing" signs I gave you yet?
Go bigga'

Thanks Bob !!!!!!!!!

Second cut has nothing but blackberry bushes surrounding it to negotiate your kite past. One miss-step would shred a kite in a heartbeat (along with the pilot in the process). If you don't keep your kite steady in the high wind the high bush will grab your line and slice right through it (along with the pilot in the process).

And yes there is the rocks...
And virtually no escape downwind.
If you can not stay upwind stay away.
Period.

None of that will ever change.
Sherman will never be a place for beginners.
