Is it a weak season for Waddell?

Post by drroc » Fri Jun 12, 2015 10:26 am

It feels like this season is pretty weak for Waddell compared to the last three years I have been in the Bay Area. Is this normal, or was the last few years stronger than usual?

I thought it has been pretty normal. But as others stated Waddell starts late March-May kind of hit and miss this time of year.

Where do you guys check conditions at Waddell and Scott's? How can I check if the day is going to be big?

This shows the waves as well as the forecast for the ocean buoy wind

I just use a free account as the wind forecast more than two days into the future is typically crap. Also, I use ikitesurf for the daily report as they take thermals/ocean breezes into consideration.

Finally, some leap of faith is always required.

Waddell feels like it does better during the summer in a more traditional seasonal pattern where we get low fog locked in focused on the SF coast with that magic break in the fog at Pigeon Point.

This year has been somewhat whacky: lots of high clouds all day on many days, and very few days of that cloudless sky other than the fog creeping in over the city... Instead, cluster of fog mixed with high clouds and medium and shifty wind all day.

That being said, maybe that is actually typical of June where we transition from Spring Pacific NW HP clearing wind to the classic summer fog thermal pattern...

Is it same as in the bay, i.e. the wind picks up in the afternoon and dies out after 5-6pm?

So on a given weekend if the forecast show enough "base" wind and clear day, and iKiteSurf looks good then the leap of faith makes sense? How much wind do you want to see in the forecast to get convinced?

Typical at 3rd is wind picks up 2 or 3pm and blows till 7-8. Convinced in summer if forecast shows 15+ and sherman is lower :)
Typical Sherman is 18-2x kts early morning, then lul to low or mid teens then back to around 20 kts after 3
