so after all my perching about safety and common since
I had a situation today at Berkeley that I will share
I could let it slide but That is not my style
I self launch there a lot, I use a line tide to a log done it too many times worst thing that happens is the kite rolls down wind (if it's light ) and I reset go again.
so today my log is gone I mean not on the beach...Gone ...(who took my LoG?)
so I find another log tie my line on and pull with all my 200 lbs and cant move it
k good to go
I launch my friend fey and hook up my lines to self launch off the static line
set the kite up on it wing tip and it jumps around a bit then launch's (ok it's done that before means it's windy)
I run back to the bar to get control and hook up my safety before I hookin
but the log flys over my head and THEN falls off heading for my head...
kites a run away heading for the FeeWay
S.H.I.T. I run a after it
Lockley a truck runs over the bar at the onramp
S.H.I.T
the driver gets out and starts for the bar but I yelled him off and the kite hits the ground and slows down
I grab the chicken loop then one line 50 feet from the slow lane hiway 80
NOT the end of story
I get the kite, deflate the leading roll up head back to the beach
im kind of pissed
so I set back up
find my other know good log that i put an eyebolt in I use at high tied
launch and fly around everything seems good I land on the static line
do it again everything seems good
wind dies
wind comes back.... I want to ride so I set up again and launch and ride .
come back and want to self land on the line hook into it and the unhook myself and the kite starts to drift and then rolls deep into the pocket I try to fly it
but its too late, i hit the sine and the kite rips apart.
so my story is just because you cant move the log doesn't mean the kite cant
be safe and make good decision early

Thanks for the story and lesson. Glad that you're okay, even though your kite isn't.

Glad you and the innocent bystanders on 80 are ok, but aww man I had similar sketchy incident with kite launching off a big log, but once kite self launched it lofted the log and the kite crashed into the sign.
I was grateful the sign stopped my kite so it didn't keep going to the fwy.
The static line launch is only as good as the anchor it's on....that's the achilles heel of that method of self launch. At least with a spin launch you are always attached to the kite and can depower or eject if the shit hits the fan.
So maybe we need to sink some anchors in at Pt Emery?

Hey Charlie,
Thanks for sharing. I swear sometimes I feel like something is up there, not wanting us to have a session on certain days, and not in a bad way, though it may feel like it at the time, but in a guardian angel kind of way. Glad you're ok and hope the kite is repairable.
