Local Foil Boards?

Post by Yoda » Mon Apr 28, 2014 11:49 am

I see that SkySki is a northern CA manufacturer (Redding,CA) that makes the sit-down type hydrofoil boards for behind boats...http://skyski.com/store/about-sky-ski.html
Has anyone reached out to them about making a kite specific foil board? Supporting a local manufacture would/could be nice. With all of the talented foil riders around here, I bet they could get some real good testing accomplished. Boards could be more readily available too. Cost could be the same, but maybe not since it's domestically made.
I was chatting with a fellow kiter yesterday and he'd mentioned about when's the evolution of foil freestyle coming (jumping with a foil) just like they do behind a boat. That would be really cool or rather interesting to see. Time will tell.

Tony bought two used and had it modified to use it for kite surfing and he seems to like. I have no interested in them because it's made of metal and heavy as hell. It might be fine to learn on it but I don't think it would be any good for racing just as any other freeride foil. You also have to mount it on a board with some floatation because Tony mounted one on a twin tip and it sank. He had to wait for a low tide next day to find it.

https://www.facebook.com/F4Fins Are local and seem to be making some. I haven't seen them at Crissy though, or maybe I have seen it but didn't know it? I'd love to have a local builder near by.

I have not been on the board but I heard good things about it. I saw the cross section of the mast and it was pretty thick carbon. I think they are not quite production yet but I think they are hoping soon.

We had a SkySki a few years back when we were boating. And Sonny is right. The foil and mast are made of billet aluminum and pretty heavy. The mounting also slices through the board and is mount to the seat support. Vs. the carbon foils I have seen have a base that mounts to the bottom and bolts thru the board.

Also, the Skyski pro we had rode best between 24-25mph. In the teens it was a pogo stick.

I rode my Sword foil for the first time yesterday and it's worth every penny. It is so much better than the Lift even though Lift is littl cheaper. I hear that Spotz is just as good. I highly recommend going with the Race foil like Sword and Spotz. If you are not conviced, try before you buy.
