Local guy up here on Van Isle made an aluminum one and was ripping around 10 years ago! So it's doable ... only strikes me that in learning phase there may be more potential for pain.
I have a buddy here who makes interesting creations out of wood....that's another option, difficulty to make it strong enough I suppose.
Luckily I got a carafino cheap!

Here's full on DIY...all wood, no carbon on that bad boy, a coat of paint, good to go! :-)

That plywood board looks cool but very hard to ride. There is a lot of very precise aerodynamics that make a foil work or not. It's amazing how much of a difference a tiny tiny angle change or shape can make a foil work or not or impossible to ride.
Rather than going to all the effort of making a cheap one I would get a real one.
As he said they broke a lot of wings. Carbon fiber isn't cheap but is worth it.

Doesn't look like it was that much effort to make that home board and confident it probably could be made for less than $300 including the old wakeboard.... with a few mods, probably pretty durable too.... and fun for sure...

Very funny and thanks for posting. To ride it strapless, would you first learn with straps and then remove, or straight away strapless (which is why I did with a regular surfboard)?
