Waddell vs Dillon

How does Dillon compare to Waddell? My usual coast spot is Waddell because it's such a great spot and relatively close for me, but am curious about trying something north of SF. How's Dillon? It looks like the wind will be good there this weekend. Thanks.

Dillon has a ton more rideable space and less riders, and wide variability in the break from one part of the beach to another. The waves can be more broken up in places, but there's almost always a place where they're just right and you can get long sweet rides. The shallow bay makes for wide variability between high and low tide and rapid changes in the break patterns. At low tide there's a great break a quarter to half a mile out going over towards the Pt Reyes side. At low tide the big breakers are farther out, and this makes it calmer with a smaller 2nd break closer in that makes it feasible for less advanced riders to get open ocean experience without as much risk as many other places.

Plus, it's harder to carpool to Dillon. :-)

I had my 1st session at Dillon this weekend. I only have 1 session at Waddell to compare it too but thought both spots were excellent.

Some key differences:

Dillon is wide open and empty - I was 1 of 2 kitesurfers out at Dillon on a Saturday afternoon in 20 knots of wind. I'm sure Waddell was may more crowded at the same time.

The wind was straight onshore at Dillon so found it much harder to get out past the shore break compared to Waddell where it is cross shore.

When there are only 2 of us on the water sharks played on my mind a lot more than Waddell where there are tons of people out.

Don't guarantee on someone being able to land/launch you at Dillon so be self sufficient in this.

Definitely well worth the drive up there.

Waddell for sure... Less sharks and more people. Kiting in numbers sure helps.
Dillon too many sharks, plus it is a cold and lonely place...

Carpool to Waddell this weekend? 12M kites and twin tips only...
