ALAMEDA -- Firefighters rescued a kite surfer in the waters off Crown Memorial Beach on Saturday.

Firefighters arrived on the 1800 block of Shore Line Drive around 7:20 p.m. Saturday to find a kite surfer about a half mile out in the bay, according to authorities.

A rescue crew in a boat brought the surfer and his kite and board back to shore safely, according to the Alameda Fire Department.

No one was injured in the rescue. A total of 18 firefighters responded.

Big response as they did not adequately respond on another occasion a year or two ago when a disoriented swimmer drowned.

A half mile out and a boat brought the kiter and kite back to shore. This happens constantly at Crissy for years and years, it's reasonable to say local kiters there often depend on the rescue 'service', so if this is news because it happened once at Alameda, what about the 500 times the same thing happened at Crissy? (*tt _+_+

I couldn't agree more! Firefighters at Alameda have much to make up for. They have been a bad joke in the past! Should I ever be lost in the middle of the bay, I will pray for the coast guard, and please please not the completely incompetent Alameda firefighters!

I think things changed two years ago after that guy went and stood out in the bay and drowned and no one went after him.

A week after that event, I was at Alameda with a newbie friend. His kite got away somehow and sailed across the waters to Bay Farm Island. Numerous police and fire, in several vehicles, came out with lights flashing and I had to reassure them several times that the kiter had been left safely at the beach. They seemed determined not to have any more fiascos.

I think the reason the kiter had to be rescued on Saturday at 7:30PM is because the winds went from 12mph to 3mph in a matter of minutes around 7PM.

Do you have to pay a fee/fine/service or something if you are rescued by firefighters/coast guard?

No, which is why the 'service' is so popular at Crissy, notably in the late summer and fall.

Not true, Most of us Crissy kiters average less than one rescue a year. I have had 3 in 7 years of kiting there almost daily. Its just about learning to be self sufficient and reading the conditions right
