AVFFS: Avoiding Very Frequent Face Splashing

Post by ddubwinokur » Sun Jun 02, 2013 12:58 pm

So - just got myself a new, custom handmade board. It's beautiful, and I love it. But I'm having a problem I hope the hive mind here can help solve.

I've always had a problem with this, but now with this new board - I feel like I get sprayed in the face CONSTANTLY. It's truly a bummer, I struggle to set up for moves when I can't see what's happenning, and find myself wiping my eyes every moment.

What changes can I make to my technique to avoid spraying water into my eyes? I already try to ride smoothly over the chop, and keep the kite high so I'm lifted a bit higher out of the water.

What do you all do to cut down on water spraying you in the face? Do others have this problem at all? Is it something that proper board design can solve? (have my eyes on new shinn anyway...)

Thanks All. DW

It could be board design or your not riding with enough power in the kite. I get spray to the face when the winds are marginal because the board is not powered enough to get proper water displacement. With enough power you should be fish tailing the water away from you. Try loading up the kite and edging the board harder. If that does not work it's the board. IMHO.

Lean back more on your rear leg and against the kite. This will also help you go upwind better. You will be forced to do this if you make sure your front leg is straight (careful dont lock your knee that can hurt in the chop)

Neck cone
you might look a little goofy but you will not get splashed at all

This is why you should try the board before you buy.

Rick's calf gasket goes over your calf, which is better than the neck cone. :::)

Can you take a picture of the board underside and side view?
What do the front fins look like?
Another good thing to know is if the front tip catches water - aka - plows into the water.
Or is the nose of your board completely making it over all the chop?
Do you have this issue when riding on flat water?
