oh man... And all this time I've been giving the stink eye to those tankers for cutting me off when I'm on my starboard tack.

I remember the harbor pilot who years ago (pre-kiting days) made a presentation to SF windsurfers, talking about how frightening it was when windsurfers would come anywhere near deep draft vessels. He compared it to driving down a street and knowing there was a kid on a skateboard on the sidewalk that was threatening to cut out in front of your vehicle......and the overwhelming anxiety about being powerless to stop in time or do anything about it if he did.
He told the story of some windsurfer who charged right in front of a tanker he was piloting out through the slot......he lost sight of the guy from the bridge and was convinced he'd run him over. He dashed over to the side and looked down to see the guy close enough to have to fend off but looking up, yelling and flipping off the pilot.
The guy actually thought he had right of way.
Amazing. I'll bet you the guy was a Phd or something to boot.....smart people do stupid things all the time......
Thanks for the posting, good to remind people.
i like to go by, he who is bigger... has right away.
We certainly know by now that YOU go by that rule.
oh - hold on - that was the bigger voice that was
I've seen close calls with barges on the Columbia River, but this is my favorite mishap:
I saw 4 kiters need to get picked up by coast guard after the wind died at crissy on sunday, one who appeared to have his lines wrapped around anita rock. Keep an eye on the beach, everyone! Just because it's still blowing on the outside doesn't mean it isn't dead on shore.
I will usually go in if I see another kiter struggling near shore.
Incorrect...just the Anita rock person caused the CG responce, three others were swimming in on there own just fine, but the farthest person off shore was picked up too.
Also that person in trouble tangled up at Anita Rock never tried to self rescue just floated around and then got hung up and should have jettisoned there gear and swam in.
You are expected to swim and use self rescue techniques if at all possible.
Thanks for the clarification - I saw 4 guys out there, went to put away my kite and when I looked again the people were gone and CG was driving away.
