Yes, that's a recurring problem. To be fair, though, Friday was unusual.

I recall a spring day at Alameda last year when it was nuking. The sand was whipping up off the beach and stinging you, there were lots of kites lined up on the beach and everyone had a 9m or smaller. It was crystal clear this wasn't a "big kite" day. I didn't have a 9m at the time and I didn't even think of pumping up my 12m--I just watched for a while and then went home.

Friday was different--very deceptive. When I arrived in the early afternoon, there were only a couple of people out and the wind seemed "eh." In fact, I was more concerned I might be *underpowered.* People were pumping 12's--experienced kiters, not newbies, including my teacher. (He later said he wasn't overpowered, but he did come in for his 10.5).

I wasn't getting pulled off my board, but I could've gone with the 9m right from the start. I'm still not clear on how or why this deception occurred.

a 150 lbs kiter can be powered on a 9m with a surfboard where a 200 lbs dude will need a 12m to power through with his twintip. I don't see the issue with this. People should be able to assess the conditions, their competence level and riding style and relate to other riders on the spot to make an informed decision about the right kite size for that session. If you don't know, ask others what they think! It's fine to brainstorm with other kiters.

It's a shame that the over powered girl wasn't the one in bikini screaming at others...I can see the youtube video already.
