3rd ave today the 10th

Post by ali_sf » Thu Jan 10, 2013 10:04 am

Hey guys,
I have never kited in the bay area during the winter. Asides from the cold water, any insights? Best time to go. Anyone will be out there today? If so let me know.
Cheers

Biggest thing is the cold - 49 water and 44 air right now. Water is a little nastier because of the run off and there is a super low tide: -1.3 ft at 5:30 - so go early. Im headed to coast but I bet someone will show at 3rd.

wetsuit, no booties needed unless you have princessita feet. Looks good right now, though wind looks promising the whole day. Low tide (coast) is ~3.30pm, meaning that from 2.30ish-6+pm it'll be turd city out there. Enjoy ^^

i agree coast sounds better, but the waves are also huge right now.

I disagree on the booties. As the tides get really low, you stand a greater chance of having to deal with the mussel encrusted rocks. If you try to walk through those, you can end up with some pretty nasty slices on your feet.

Last August I removed a broken bomber sized beer bottle from the center of the upper launch, right at low tide line. (fucking humans!) It was nasty, four inch protruding shards right where I kicked my board off. It could have been messy. I have always been skeptical of kiting 3rd without booties, & this sealed the deal for me.
