I grabbed this snapshot on the Wednesday in question after playing a game with the hour by hour time lapse (how many kites can you find in any given frame). Knowing how long the beach is, why is everyone bunched together? What is wrong with the next 1/4 mile of beach south of this? No good peaks?

Wind can get a little lighter as you go down to sloat sometimes.
Also, more beach to self land and self launch at the cliff house and the parking is right there, you don't have to cross the road if you forgot something in your car.

Well, it's true due to the largess of my routine I need a tremendous amount of downwind real estate, but my agility kept me clear, inside, outside, between, upwind and downwind of the crowd but I can be your scapegoat if you want... NACF

I think there are so many kites at OB because it was
1) windy
2) end of season
3) this years crop of newbies now have the nerve to give it a try (good for them we were all there once)
4) the waves were small, see #3
