yah, dave's point about it being half a back roll is spot on. the act of edging and popping is half a back roll. that's why committing to the front roll is so important, as you really have to force your body to rotate in a direction opposite from what you started at...

watch shawn richman do a front roll. watch his head. he's super exaggerated in how he throws it. you should do the same.

arms in pop ..rotate..knees up and head and shoulders lean and tilt...then..find your landing ...get some!

Also, it's a pretty easy progression to go from a frontroll to continuing the spin into a toeside landing.

The first time it happened for me was a mistake when I threw the rotation too hard and kept going.

I'm sure the freestyle kids will be replying to this with the correct name for the trick I am talking about.
