Input for decent waterproof headphones.

Post by windhorny » Sun Apr 08, 2012 10:10 am

About 5 or 6 years ago I bought about every single water proof headphone available and the otterbox. The otterbox part worked great but the headphones ALL sucked! I am just wondering if anyone has experience with some of the newer stuff out. My experience was that the headphones that would still work after getting wet sounded the worst, barely good for listening to news radio-zero bass. The ones that sound decent with mild bass would completely shut off with a single drop of water.

The other day i tried my old gear out and reminded me how nice it sometimes to flow to your favorite tunes. but one splash and I couldnt even recognize the songs!

I've had two sets: the white H20 wrap-arounds, which sucked - at any speed the air would get into your leading ear and basically muffled all the sound. Then I got the blue H20 surge and they worked much better. They are actually designed to sound best when completely underwater, but I found they were still pretty good in high speed/dry ear conditions.

I'd be interested to know more about what people use as well. I'd like to get some music going on the water as well. I have both iPod Classic, 3rd Gen iPod Shuffle and 6th Gen iPod Nano...

Ive been pretty happy with the acquapack i got from boardsports. Ive used it 7 - 8 times already with my iphone 3gs and 4s, and not only listened to music, but was also able to answer a call and text (bad idea probably) while I was kiting.. (with the kite at 12) :) here are the links

I use this unit. Alas, the headphones are the weak link in the system. Sound is tinny at best, and then you lose the sound all the time due to water getting into the ear canal. They only work when I wear my hood, the buds don't stay in otherwise. I also had to modify the ear buds so they wouldn't pierce my ear drums, as the hood holds the buds securely in the ear canal.

I would experiment with other headphones, but these headphones are proprietary to this unit. They screw into the unit to help create a waterproof seal.

Having said all this, I still use the unit whenever I go out. I have a front entry wetsuit, and I store the mp3 player right under the zipper, sits there like a pace maker.
